Math Help in Honolulu, HI.

The winter break provides a wonderful opportunity for you to spend quality time together as a family and for your child to relax, have fun, and blow off some steam after a semester of hard work. That said, it is a good idea to try to keep your child’s academic skills sharp over the holidays, otherwise they may struggle when they return to school. Today, The Tutoring Center in Honolulu would like to offer a few ideas to encourage your child to write during the break.

Journals

Suggesting to your child that they keep a journal is a great idea for many reasons. Not only does journalling provide your child with valuable writing and penmanship practice, but it is also a fantastic way for them to express themselves creatively and to work through their emotions. Let them pick out a journal they like the look of to encourage them to use it, and make it clear that you won’t read it unless they want you to, so they can express themselves however they wish.

Thank you cards

A simple way to practice writing after Christmas is to sit down with your child and write thank you cards to anyone that gave you presents or came to visit over the festive period. Not only does this provide practice writing, but it also instils gratitude and good manners!

Write for fun

Writing can be tremendous fun if approached in the right way. Ask your child to write you a story or a poem about a subject they’re interested in. Perhaps after you have watched a movie or a television show you could ask them to write a different ending or a new plot. Praise them liberally for these efforts to make sure they feel positive and develop into confident writers.

Sneak in practice

You don’t need to make it explicit that it’s time to practice writing. Ask your child to write down the grocery list for you as you dictate, or ask them to make a list of things you need to pack for a trip to visit friends or relatives. Short writing tasks like these will most likely go unnoticed by your child, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t valuable practice!
