Math Help in Honolulu, HI.

Finding ways to teach your children at home isn't the easiest of tasks, let alone getting them out and enjoying the sun. This article aims to help you with the very subject. When it comes to helping your youngster with homework or improving their reading and writing levels, it’s often a struggle. Namely because, after spending a whole day at school sitting down, children want to get out into the sun!

How to Enjoy the Sun While Learning

If this sounds familiar, below are some great ideas from The Tutoring Center, Honolulu HI on how you can take your student’s learning outdoors and brighten up their reading and writing levels.

A Reading Picnic

It’s no secret that students don’t really enjoy the act of reading. However, you may be surprised to find that it isn’t because of disliking the task, but more that their exposure to reading is guided by their teachers and limited to textbooks and learning resources. Break this negative connection with a reading picnic. Start in the kitchen by packing all of the items you will need for a successful picnic and, on the way to the park, stop by your local bookstore and let your student pick a book they would like to read. Once they have selected one, buy two copies and then head to the park. After you have all had a chance to eat lunch and play on the equipment (we know you want to, also!), sit down and take a rest on the picnic blanket and get to reading. However, instead of simply reading until everybody becomes tired and wants to go home, take a rest after each of the chapters to stop, eat a snack, and discuss what has happened in the book so far. Some topics to discuss are:
  • Who is your favorite character
  • Who is your least favorite character
  • What do you think will happen in the next chapter
  • What do you think will happen at the end of the book
Once you have discussed these, get back to reading another chapter. If you want to, consider making small bets about what will happen next with the person who guesses correctly (including you) being rewarded with a small treat. Not only is this a great way to create a positive connection to reading, it’s also a great way for you to identify any learning challenges, such as struggling to understand context or even struggling with pronunciation. If your student struggles with their reading, one-to-one tutoring in Honolulu can help. Make It a Writing Picnic

If writing is your student's struggle, then a writing picnic can help. Similar to the idea above, instead of picking up some books, throw in a couple of pads of paper, some pens, and colored pencils, and make your way to your favorite park. Again, after you have all had a play and eaten, sit down to do some writing. However, instead of dictating that they write, like is done in school, encourage them to write about absolutely anything they would like. This could range from a diary entry about the day they have had or are having right through to a completely made up story about characters they have seen on television or in the movies. If you want to make this a group activity, start a story by writing one or two paragraphs and then hand the pad to your youngster to write another two, and so on. Is this activity going to result in a story which makes no sense and just makes you laugh? Absolutely! Will it help to build a fun and enjoyable connection with writing? It sure will! Similar to the reading picnic, this activity also affords you the opportunity to identify any learning challenges your child is struggling with, such as spelling or sentence structure.
