Math Help in Honolulu, HI.

07/10/2017
Just becase you don't understand their lessons doesn't mean that you can't help your student study at home. This article has two great ways for you to try! When it comes to summer vacation, the summer learning slide is very real. In fact, a previous post explained in more detail how it is caused and what its effects can be. And while no parent wants their child's learning to go backwards, it can be hard for them to help their student if they can't understand their textbooks.

All Parents Can Help Their Student Study at Home

If this sounds like you, then The Tutoring Center, Honolulu HI has just the post for you. From extensive experience providing one-to-one tutoring in Honolulu HI, below are two great ways that you can help your student retain important lessons over the summer break.

Flashcards

That's right! The very same teaching method that you likely remember is still around, and for a very good reason - they work! Flashcards are a great way for parents to give their student quick pop-quizzes throughout the day. The challenge, however, is knowing what content to write on the flashcards. After all, if you can't read and understand a modern textbook then how can you be expected to know what to write on your cards? One of the best ways to find out is to sit down with your student and flip through the notes in their notebooks. While you might not understand all of the references and terminologies, look out for the following:
  • Notes that have been written, scribbled out, and then written again a number of times.
  • A page filled with the teacher's words, verbatim.
  • Incomplete notes or notes with doodles on them.
These can all be indicators that your student struggled with that particular lesson. Whether they couldn't understand what was happening, were so nervous that they wrote down everything, or they gave up and became distracted, these notes should be reviewed. These are the notes and lessons that you can focus on with your flashcards. Have your student complete each note while you cut out pieces of card to use. Once they have finished, help them to verify the information is correct and create your cards with these correct and complete notes. When it comes time to write, remember that flashcards will work best when they are concise. For example, avoid questions such as:
  • The Hoover dam was constructed between 1931 and 1936. What was the total cost to build?
Instead, opt for questions such as:
  • How much did it cost to build the Hoover Dam?
Short and concise questions allow for faster memory recall as your student isn't focusing on information that isn't important to the question. This is also a great technique for students to learn to identify key points of an exam or assessment question and answer it quickly and correctly. Flashcards are a great way to keep your child's brain active during the summer break and are a great complement to formal one-to-one tutoring. Family Games

Every family loves to sit down and play boardgames. Whether it's an hours-long game of Monopoly or a short and sweet game of Heads Up, your family is sure to have fun. If this sounds like your family, you have a great opportunity to include learning into your family game nights. Start with Trivial Pursuit. Of course, the range of questions is going to be somewhat broad. However, what if you could make your own question and answer cards that you could use specifically for the student playing? Using the information from the flashcards you made in the tip above, make your own small game cards with multiple answers on the back of them. Then, when your child lands on a question card, instead of recalling information about a famous movie star they can refresh challenging lessons from last school year.
